Reviewer Guidelines
The reviewers play a crucial role in maintaining the academic quality of BASA: Journal of Language & Literature. They are responsible for evaluating submitted manuscripts within their area of expertise and providing constructive, objective, and timely feedback to authors. The peer-review process ensures that each published article meets the journal’s standards of scholarly rigor, originality, and relevance.
- Preliminary Responsibilities of Reviewers
Before accepting a review assignment, reviewers must consider the following:
- Expertise Match
Reviewers should ensure that the manuscript falls within their academic competence. If the content does not fit their area of expertise, they are encouraged to notify the editorial team immediately. - Time Availability
The review process must be completed within 2–4 weeks. If reviewers are unable to meet this timeline, they should inform the editors as early as possible. - Conflict of Interest
Reviewers must contact the editors regarding any form of conflict of interest, whether personal, professional, or financial, that may influence the objectivity of their review. - Plagiarism Concerns
If reviewers detect any indication of plagiarism or ethical misconduct, they must promptly report it to the editorial team.
- General Evaluation Criteria
During the review process, reviewers assess the manuscript based on the following criteria:
- Relevance to Journal Scope
The topic must align with BASA Journal’s focus on Indonesian, Javanese, Arabic, and English language and literature, as well as language and literature education. - Contribution and Originality
Reviewers evaluate the manuscript’s scholarly contribution, including its novelty, innovation, and uniqueness in the field. - Organization and Readability
Reviewers assess the clarity, coherence, academic writing quality, and overall readability of the manuscript, including the adequacy of structure and logical flow.
- Detailed Aspects to Evaluate
- Title
- Is the title appropriate, concise, and reflective of the manuscript’s content?
- Abstract
- Does the abstract attract readers’ interest?
- Does it provide a clear, brief, and complete overview of the entire article?
- Is the abstract written in both Indonesian and English?
- Introduction
- Does it clearly describe the research problem, scope, and objectives?
- Does it highlight the novelty or contribution of the study?
- Literature Review
- Does it include relevant theories, concepts, and approaches?
- Is it up-to-date and aligned with the study’s analytical framework?
- Method
- Are the research procedures explained clearly?
- Does the method appropriately address the stated problem?
- Results and Discussion
- Are the results supported with tables, figures, or other visuals when needed?
- Is there a clear connection between the results and theoretical concepts?
- Does the discussion explain both theoretical and practical implications?
- Conclusion
- Does it provide a clear summary of research findings?
- Do the recommendations correspond to the study’s results?
- Does it answer the research problem effectively?
- References
- Are references formatted according to APA style?
- Are the majority of references published within the last 10 years?
- Are the cited works relevant and reputable?
- Review Decision and Submission
Once reviewers agree to conduct the review, they may download the manuscript and supplementary files through the system. After completing the evaluation, they must upload:
- Comments for the editors
- Constructive feedback for the authors
- A recommendation regarding the manuscript
Possible Editorial Recommendations
- Accept without revision
- Accept with minor revisions
- Accept with major revisions, with required changes stated clearly
- Reject the manuscript
The review must be completed within 2–4 weeks. If additional time is required, reviewers should contact the editorial team.
