Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as an inhibitor of tannin activity in concentrate rations containing white kabesak leaves on in vitro gas production and total volatile fatty acid production (T-VFA). The study used the Makkar gas production technique. The treatment applied was the level of use of white kabesak leaves in concentrate rations with the addition of PEG. The treatments were: R1: 10% white kabesak leaves, R2:  20% white kabesak leaves, R3: 30% white kabesak leaves, and R4: 40% white kabesak leaves. The results showed that the treatment significantly affected gas production and total VFA of the ration. Potential gas production (mL/500 mg DM) insoluble fraction gas production rate (mL/hour), and 48-hour gas production (mL/500 mg DM) showed no difference among treatments. T-VFA production showed that R1 and R2 treatments were significantly higher than others. It was concluded that the addition of Polyethylene glycol (PEG) in concentrate rations containing white kabesak leaves increased in vitro gas production and production of total volatile fatty acids (T-VFA). The presence of tannin in white kabesak leaves can be inhibited by the presence of PEG so ration fermentation is increased.
