Abstract

Globalisation and rapid advances in information technology have intensified the moral and social challenges confronting adolescents, including the weakening of sustained engagement with religious values. This study examines how religious values are internalised among members of Ikatan Pelajar Putri Nahdlatul Ulama (IPPNU) in Kapanewon Kasihan, Special Region of Yogyakarta. It focuses on the organisation’s religious activities, its strategies for developing religious character, and the perceived effects of internalisation on members. A descriptive qualitative case-study design was employed. Data were generated through passive participant observation, in-depth interviews and documentary analysis involving organisational leaders and active members selected purposively. The data were analysed interactively through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification, with credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability used to support trustworthiness. Religious values were cultivated through cadre-development programmes, regular hadrah and tahlil gatherings, Qur’anic recitation, community religious events and mosque-cleaning initiatives. The principal mechanisms were leadership modelling, repeated value-based practice, mentoring and motivational support. Participants associated these processes with stronger religious commitment, discipline, responsibility, social concern and organisational participation. The study contributes a context-specific account linking particular IPPNU practices to sequential stages of value transformation, value transaction and transinternalisation within an Aswaja framework. Organisational leaders should strengthen consistent role modelling, differentiate mentoring for members with diverse religious backgrounds, and develop adaptive, sustainable programmes capable of engaging young people in changing social and digital environments.
