Blakasuta Epistemology and Construction Honesty Character Education: Integrating Tegal Local Wisdom in Madrasah Aliyah

Abstract

The prevalence of adolescent moral degradation, such as cyberbullying and academic cheating, underscores the urgency of contextual character education. This study aims to reconstruct the epistemology of blakasuta, a local-wisdom character from Tegal, which emphasizes radical honesty as the foundation for the development of religious character in Madrasah Aliyah  in Tegal Regency. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with Madrasah Aliyah teachers and students, participant observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that blakasuta provides empirical validation of the Islamic value of shiddiq, shifting character education from merely normative-theological to sociocultural experiences. Interview results indicate that students are more motivated to uphold integrity when their local identities are respected, and a safe space for honesty is provided. However, digital disruption poses challenges because the brecuh (rough) aspect of openness can be amplified into online hostility. This study concludes that strengthening adab as an ethical filter for blakasuta creates a resilient school culture. The results indicate that pedagogy based on the local wisdom of blakasuta improves students' intrinsic discipline and psychological well-being. This is reflected in a decrease in repeat violations in madrasah disciplinary records, as well as an increase in students' willingness to admit mistakes honestly, without fear. Furthermore, 9 out of 10 students reported feeling more confident and comfortable learning when their cultural identity is respected, creating a safe space for honesty and emotional well-being.
